SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY (BARIATRIC SURGERY)
Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as bariatric surgery:
Is the most commonly performed form of obesity surgery in the world. In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, the aim is to turn the stomach into a longitudinal tube.
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery provides effective results for those with a body mass index of 40 or higher, whose index is 35 and who also have co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea syndrome and knee joint problems. Patients should be fully evaluated by a general and obesity surgeon, internal medicine specialist, psychiatrist, cardiologist and anesthesiologist by performing all blood and urine tests before the surgery. If necessary, patients should undergo abdominal ultrasonography and stomach endoscopy (gastroscopy). The patient should be taken into surgery after receiving medical clearance for surgery.
Gastric sleeve surgery is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1 hour.
After the patient is given general anesthesia, the abdomen is inflated by injecting air (CO2) through a small incision on the left side of the belly.2A video camera is sent from here and all intra-abdominal organs, especially the liver, are checked on screen. 3-4 small incisions are made. The stomach is freed from the surrounding tissues. Afterwards, the stomach is shaped into a tube by cutting and stitching at the same time using an automatic stitching system called the stapler.
